What is SafePrompt? How it protects AI prompts

SafePrompt is a free Chrome extension that watches what you type or paste into AI chat boxes and redacts sensitive data before it leaves your browser. It is built for people who use ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Kimi, and similar tools every day — developers, students, freelancers, and teams.

The problem SafePrompt solves

AI assistants are useful, but prompts often contain secrets by accident: AWS access keys, OpenAI API keys, GitHub tokens, emails, phone numbers, or credit card numbers copied from another tab. Once that text is sent, it may be stored by the AI provider under their policies. SafePrompt reduces that risk by catching known patterns early.

How SafePrompt works (simple version)

1. You install SafePrompt in Chrome.
2. You open a supported AI site and type or paste normally.
3. SafePrompt scans the prompt for sensitive patterns (API keys, PII, secrets).
4. Matches are replaced with placeholders like [API_KEY], [PII], or [SECRET].
5. A toast appears with Undo and Allow once if you need control.

What “100% local” means

Local means detection and redaction run inside the Chrome extension on your computer. Settings and count-only statistics (how many detections) are saved with Chrome local storage. Secret values themselves are not stored in that log.
